The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Professor Tunde Adeniran, has expressed dismay at the current happenings in the country, which include the challenge of tackling the rampaging COVI-19 pandemic and injurious power play ongoing in the ruling All Progressives Party (APC).

He noting that these coupled with the huge national debt calls for emergency adding that “after decades of attempts at democratic renewal, some politicians are bent on setting Nigeria on the path of retrogression”.

Professor Tunde Adeniran in a press statement issued on Friday and sent to PMParrot, said “that the perennial cycle of conflicts and confusion is assuming a multilevel crisis that has engulfed the ruling party, as he warned that the situation calls for concern among democrats and patriots in Nigeria.

The erstwhile MAMSER (now NOA) boss, who is of the view that though party politics “centre largely around effective management and resolution of crisis, as well as the need to achieve right balancing of interests and tendencies”, said the current development in APC was taking a dimension of national embarrassment, which is capable of snowballing into a full-blown political conflagration.

The SDP National Chairman therefore called for caution in navigating “the dangerous contours along the lanes of the democratic process so as to strengthen the relevant institutions, consolidate democracy and let the country be stable and on the path of sustainable development”.

He advised the nation to avoid a shipwreck of its hard earned democracy by addressing “other threats of worsening insecurity and dwindling economy in the face of serious public health crisis occasioned by the ravaging covid-19 pandemic, as he noted that the rising poverty and declining well-being of the citizens “are making Nigerians lowering their guards while some states are considering some compromise regarding protocols”.

Professor Tunde Adeniran also called on the Federal Government and the concerned State Governments to enforce the necessary protocols to save Nigerians from self-annihilation.

He also drew government’s attention to the need to address the issues of the economy, particularly in the area of the huge debt of the nation, as he said the “national expenditure framework and fiscal strategy have become worrisome than ever before”.

The former MAMSER boss said “the fact that our Nation is faced with incredible indebtedness in relation to revenue, servicing debts and being unable to pay the debts, are enough signals that we are marching toward insolvency”, as he declared that “it is time to wake up, open our eyes and stop the endless borrowing”.
