The Lagos State Police Command has rejected claims of escalating crime rates in the state, as reported in a recent Guardian Newspaper article.
The publication, dated January 20, 2025, suggested that CCTV cameras in Lagos have been ineffective in curbing criminal activities.
Police authorities, however, have dismissed the report as outdated, misleading, and baseless. According to a statement from the police public relations officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the article was originally written in July 2024 but was inexplicably published six months later without updates to reflect the current situation.
“The story does not align with present facts. Empirical statistics show Lagos was recently recognized as the safest state in the country. This recognition brought over 500,000 visitors during the 2024 Yuletide, with 90 percent remaining in the state. Remarkably, near-zero crime was recorded during this period,” the statement stated.
The police also emphasized the positive role of CCTV cameras in enhancing public safety, noting that the surveillance systems have been crucial in preventing crimes and capturing offenders.
Condemning the Guardian’s publication, Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ishola, called the report an “ill-thought-out decision” that could unnecessarily alarm residents.
He urged Lagosians to disregard the article and continue their daily activities without fear of harassment.
CP Ishola reassured the public that extensive resources have been deployed across the state to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
“The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to securing lives and property”, the statement concluded.
The command also encouraged media organizations to verify facts and practice responsible journalism to avoid creating unwarranted panic.
