The Biodun Oyebanji-led government in Ekiti State has urged residents to take greater responsibility for the protection and maintenance of public infrastructure across the state.
The Director-General of the Ekiti State Bureau of Civic Orientation and Citizenship (BCOC), Mrs Olawumi Famuyiwa, made the call in Ado-Ekiti during a live radio programme, Ekiti Loni/Ekiti Today.
According to her, the government is investing heavily in roads, hospitals, schools and waste management systems, stressing that citizens have a duty to support security and maintenance agencies in safeguarding these facilities.
She also urged residents to keep their environment clean and make proper use of the Dino bins provided across the Ado-Ekiti metropolis and other parts of the State, warning against vandalism and misuse, including the disposal of human waste in them.
Famuyiwa called for proper monitoring of scavengers’ activities in communities and encouraged residents to report any wrongdoing to security agencies.
She emphasised that payment of taxes, rates and levies remains critical to funding infrastructure and public services, adding that citizens must also contribute to economic growth through entrepreneurship and innovation.
The BCOC boss further stressed the need for residents to obey laws and regulations, maintain peace and avoid acts capable of causing violence, breakdown of order and destruction of property.
With the June 20 governorship election approaching, she urged eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate in the electoral process, while cautioning youths against being used for electoral malpractice.
Famuyiwa also appealed to parents to take a more active role in properly raising their children, stressing the importance of proper guidance and supervision.
She commended Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s leadership style, describing him as a model of Omoluabi—the Yoruba ideal of good character—and expressed appreciation for the prevailing peace in the state, as well as residents’ support for the administration.
On social values, she decried what she described as indecent dressing among some young women and urged a return to modesty and moral standards.
She reiterated that civic duty and community participation are crucial to sustaining government investments, calling on residents to take ownership of public property and support efforts to maintain them.
Meanwhile, callers to the programme from Ekiti and neighbouring Ondo State commended the bureau’s sensitisation efforts and praised the state government’s performance, urging it to sustain the delivery of democratic dividends.
