The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has invited Tobi Amusan, Favour Ashe, and Ese Brume, with 26 other athletes, to the National Sports Commission (NSC) Commonwealth Games training camp in Abuja as preparations intensify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in July.

According to a press statement from AFN media, the invited athletes comprise 14 men and 15 women selected from performances at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games National Trials held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

Other athletes who were unable to participate in the trials due to visa-related challenges were also considered based on their current performances and rankings.

Other notable names on the list include Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Kanyisola Ajayi, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George, Esther Joseph, and Ella Onojuvwevwo.

AFN Secretary-General Israel Inwang announced that all invited athletes are expected to report to the NSC Commonwealth Games camp in Abuja from Thursday, June 25, 2026, for an intensive training programme ahead of the Games.

Nigeria’s athletics contingent is expected to compete in 18 events across track and field, including the men’s 4x100m relay, the women’s 4x100m relay, and the mixed 4x400m relay.

Also listed are quarter-milers Samuel Ogazi, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Patience Okon-George, and Esther Joseph, while Nigeria’s field event hopefuls include shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, long jump star Ese Brume, high jumper Temitope Adeshina, javelin thrower Chinecherem Nnamdi, and hammer thrower Oyesade Olatoye.

AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa expressed confidence in the team’s preparations and wished the athletes, coaches, and officials a successful and hitch-free camping exercise.

This will be the fourth Commonwealth Games to be hosted in Scotland, following the 1970 and 1986 games in Edinburgh and the 2014 Games in Glasgow.

Team Nigeria recorded its best-ever performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

The final medals standings saw Team Nigeria finish in seventh spot with a total of 35 medals: 12 gold, nine silver, and 14 bronze. Notably, all 12 gold medals were won by female athletes.
