The Nigerian Police, Enugu State Command, has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, whose remains were reportedly concealed in the toilet of his apartment.
Emmanuel, a resident of Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, was arrested on Monday, September 21, after police received information that he had allegedly killed the woman identified only as Chinyere.
Police said the suspect was rescued from an angry mob and subsequently arrested by operatives of the Awkunanaw Division at about 6:30pm.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the alleged killing occurred on September 19 following an argument between the suspect and the victim.
According to the police, Emmanuel allegedly struck the woman on the head with a pestle, killing her.
He allegedly wrapped her remains in nylon and concealed them inside the toilet of his apartment.
Police said the decomposing body was later discovered after the odor attracted neighbours, who reportedly forced their way into the apartment and apprehended the suspect before police arrived.
The remains have been evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to identify and locate the victim’s relatives.
During preliminary interrogation, police said the suspect confessed to the killing and claimed that the argument was over allegations that either of them had infected the other with HIV.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the incident.
The command said the suspect would be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations.
The police also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to exercise caution about whom they visit or spend time with and to inform trusted relatives or friends of their movements.
