Nigerians are getting more politically sophisticated with time and they are getting more worried.
The reason they are bothered is not far-fetched…It is the seemingly unending feud between the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Executive and the Dr Bukola Saraki-led legislative arm of government in the country.
So many issues are involved and so many policies are being kept ‘in view’ all because the two arms of government are not singing the same tune.
On Monday, April 3, 2017, however, it was reported that behind closed doors and separately, President Buhari, Senate President Saraki and House of Representatives’ Speaker, Yakubu Dogara met in Abuja.
Expectedly, the festering rift between the Presidency and the National Assembly took the centre stage.
The President first met with the Speaker before meeting the Senate President — for about 40 minutes each.
While Nigerians are hopeful that with this development, the immediate issues of the confirmation of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu and that of the approval of Resident Electoral Commission (REC) will be mutually sorted out. Buhari refused to remove Magu while the Senate withheld approval for the appointments of REC.
For now, all Nigerians want is good and cohesive governance. The present economic recession biting the high and mighty is not going to just disappear. It needs the concerted effort of all including the legislature and the executive.
Buhari, Saraki and Dogara should find a meeting point for the benefit of Nigerians. And fortunately, they all belong to the same ruling party, the All Progressives Congress.
The well being of Nigerians who voted in their party must be taken into consideration at all times. This is the covenant they had when they were being sworn into power. There is absolute need to fulfill their promises to.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
