The man of God in charge of the Apata Baptist Church, Reverend (Dr.) Oyebode Idowu, has appealed to Christians all over Nigeria to support the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Dr. Supo Ayokunle, morally, spiritually and financially.

Speaking with PMParrotng in Ibadan on Thursday, Rev. (Dr.)Idowu, commended the CAN President, who is also the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, for restructuring the umbrella body of Christians in Nigeria since he assumed office.

According to him, before Dr. Ayokunle came on board, there were no structures and staff at CAN’s National Secretariat in Abuja, as past Presidents of the association operated from their personal homes and offices.

Rev Idowu, however, added that the new CAN President, with the assistance of the Nigerian Baptist Convention has started to put structures in place at the CAN’s national secretariat by recruiting staff and furnishing offices.

He maintained that CAN needs a lot of money to discharge its responsibilities and obligations to Nigerian Christians effectively, and therefore, urged Christians in the country to support the association financially.

The man of God added that if Christians refused to finance their umbrella body, CAN will have no choice than to go cap-in-hand to solicit for financial assistance from politicians in government, and that this might undermine the integrity of the association, as “he who pays the pipers, dictates the tunes. ”

The Reverend in charge of Apata Baptist Church noted that it will not be too much if each Nigerian Christian is supporting CAN with N500 every month, saying this will enable the association to tackle the challenges against Christians and Christianity in the country.
