The Chairman of Aare Latoosa Local Council Development Authority of Oyo State who is directly in charge of the controversial Bodija Market Abattoir, Basorun Adekunle Oladeji has given a hint of what the Senator Abiola Ajimobi-led government in the state hopes to do with the recently demolished old abattoir.

The youthful politician gave the hint on Tuesday while speaking at a joint meeting with representatives of all members of media groups and organizations in Oyo State at Amosun Village in Akinyele Local Government Area where the newly build central abattoir for the use of butchers in the state is located.

Basorun Oladeji, in his submission at the meeting said the decision on what to do with the old abattoir rests solely with the governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

His words “The Governor will decide the next move but I can say here that together with my team, we are thinking of suggesting the building a befitting Fire Station for the market. Whatever is remaining may be used to construct ultra modern shopping complex.”

He also seized the opportunity to inform market men and women at Bodija Market, especially, butchers, that there is no law that says they should not sell meat at the market.

Said the Chairman “What we have outlawed is the slaughtering of cows at the market. Nobody should engage in the killing of cows in the market but they are free to sell after processing at Amosun Village Abattoir.

“I addition, I also wish to tell all our traders at Bodija Market that nobody should trade or display their goods on the roads within the market. Policemen have been instructed to arrest such recalcitrant people”.

The Amosun Village Abattoir tour, which was organized by the Oyo State Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism in conjuction with other stakeholders saw mediamen being taken on a facility tour of the sprawling ultra modern abattoir.

While speaking to the mediamen, the developer of the facility, Mr Abiodun Kehinde Amadu of Amak Group said that the project as it presently stands is the very first phase.

His words “This Ibadan Central Abattoir is owned by the 11 original Local Governments in Ibadan as well as the 14 LCDAs. So far, we can say the project has consumed about five billion naira.

“Permit me to use this opportunity to inform all that Governor Abiola Ajimobi does not have any stake in this project. We as partners in the Public/Private Partnership arrangement have 50 per cent while Oyo State Government has 10. Butchers’association also has four per cent and the remaining shares go to others. We are to build, operate and hand over this to the State government in the next 35 years.

“For now, I can say here that we have water storage that can supply over 700,000 liters of water. Butchers need a lot of water and we do not wish to allow them to lack this.

“And since this facility is gated, we plan to install CCTV later. In addition to this, wastes produced here will be utilized to generate more money. We have another facility located not too far from Amosun Village from where we will work on the wastes.”

While addressing the issue of those who lost their lives during the Bodija Market riot last week on behalf of the of Oyo State, the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Toye Arulogun said “Government can not do anything until after the investigation being carried out by the police.

“Governor Ajimobi and his government quite symphatise with the families of victims, but then, government must wait till the end of the all-inclusive investigation by the police. We want to make sure those who were affected are not part of those who perpetrated the mayhem.”
