It is not an unusual development for citizens of a country to call on their leader to resign from office. This, as far as democratic tenets are concerned, is quite normal.
As a matter of fact, leaders from developed countries have been recorded in history to have resigned for reasons ranging from incompetence to carelessness and sexual misconduct. A few have had to resign due to tax evasion or negligence of duties.
That prominent Nigerians from all sectors of the economy are now calling on the country’s President Muhammadu Buhari to ‘readjust or resign’ is certainly not misplaced.
For President Buhari to have been presiding over a country for six years without much to show is enough to trigger the calls for him to quit.
There really is no need for excessive use of language or explanation. The country has continued to slide downwards. For six years, inflation in real time and sense has ravaged the land. There is no where a typical Nigerian kid can buy biscuits for five naira! Prices of goods and services have skyrocketed. Forget the ‘economic indices’ theories being floated by spin doctors of the government.
Added to this is the issue of insecurity that is prevalent in virtually all the states. This, strictly is being engendered by worsening economic situation and corruption.
Experts at a recently held economic retreat in Lagos unanimously concluded that President Buhari’s six-year-old government has been running without a template.
“If not, how can you run a country for six years and the economy continues to get bad and you are not able to do anything?”, they queried.
Along the line, seat of government employees in Abuja mentioned the advent of COVID-19 as the cause. This seems not to have held water.
Excuses upon excuses are being pushed forward. But the problems at hand are too overwhelming. Secessionists have emerged to add salt to the injury being experienced by the administration.
No matter how one looks at the situation, it is time for decisive actions to be taken by those in positions of authority in the country. A stitch in time will save more than nine. Agitators are getting more impatient by the day.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
