Dr Kayode Fayemi’s government in Ekiti State has announced that it has started taking necessary steps to ensure flood does not wreck any havoc again this year and that problems associated with flooding become a thing of the past in the State.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Barrister Iyabo Fakunle Okieimen said this during her visit to the Sole Administrator and Director General of Ekiti State Public Works Corporation in Ado Ekiti.

She explained that part of the steps been taking towards resolving the incessant flooding problems is to work in synergy with Public Works Corporation and make use some of its equipment such as backhoe for desiltation of all blocked drainages and Tipper lorries to cart away the desilted materials from flood ravaged and flood prone areas of the state.

Okieimen who mentioned other arrangements put in place by the government to curb flooding to include the monthly environmental exercise, regular removal of wastes generated from the streets and creation of awareness on radio, television and through Environmental Officers, urged the people to complement government’s efforts by stopping the habit of dumping refuse in drainages and building on water ways to allow free flow of water during rainfall.

The Commissioner reiterated the commitment of the Governor Kayode Fayemi administration to providing a safe, healthy and friendly environment for the people of the state.

Responding, the Sole Administrator, Ekiti State Public Works Corporation, Mr Sunday Awoyomi appreciated the Commissioner for taking such laudable steps towards curbing flood disaster in the state.

He expressed the readiness of the Corporation to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in tackling the problem of flooding henceforth.

The Commissioner was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Tokunbo Alokan and the General Manager of Ekiti State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), Mr Seyi Adegbola.

Meanwhile, Ekiti government, through the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs. Iyabode Fakunle-Okieimen, Wednesday, took delivery of two amphibious dredgers.
