Catholic Bishops in Nigeria have urged the electorates to vote for credible candidates with proven integrity that can work tirelessly for the growth of the country’s democracy during the 2023 general election.
The Bishops further expressed dismay at the proliferation of arms, high rate of kidnapping and the startling revelations made by the federal government about missing firearms from the Nigeria Police armory.
The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Reverend Felix Ajakaye revealed this in a statement on Wednesday.
“We urge that only leaders with positive values like proven integrity, truthfulness, trustworthiness and fear of God should be elected as our leaders when the time comes. As leaders of the Church, we remain non-partisan but we strongly advocate and endorse any candidate who professes and embodies positive values that can help our nation to develop strong and functional institutions as a framework for true democracy in our country”.
The Bishops described President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent listing of killer bandits as terrorists as a huge relief while urging the President to wipe out all forms of banditry and terrorism in the nation.
The Bishops further bemoaned the increasing rate of drug addiction, armed robbery and rape in the country describing it as products of depressed and decayed system of education in the nation.
The Clergymen, however, urged governments at all levels to adequately fund education and provide a conducive environment suitable for learning within Nigeria tertiary institutions.
