The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has launched a service charter which will guide electricity distribution companies (Discos) in their customer operations.
The service charter makes it obligatory for Discos to install check meters to monitor consumption within five days of a customer reporting that his meter is working incorrectly.
In terms of meters dispute, NERC said, “Where a customer reports a problem to a DisCo that would suggest that the cause of the problem is that electricity meter used to record usage at the premises is recording incorrectly, such as that an electricity bill is too high or top low compared to normal monthly bills for the same customer or premises, the following applies:-
“An official of the Disco to visit within three days of problem being reported.
“Five days is the standard if it is necessary to install a check meter to monitor consumption.”
In terms of reconnection of suppliers disconnected for non-payment either due to outstanding charges including reconnection charges or enters into a payment arrangement with the DisCos for outstanding debt, NERC insisted that the DisCos are mandated to reconnect customers within 24 hours upon payment of debt and reconnection charge.
The Commission said when notified a fault leading to loss of electricity, the DisCo is obligated to visit the premises within 24 hours to determine the cause whether that of fuse, minor equipment fault or any other fault.
NERC mandated the DisCo to repair and reconnect within 48 hours of notification.
In his opening remarks, the chairman, Engr. Sanusi Garba, noted that the Charter establishes the high standards of service that electricity customers can expect from the power sector.
He explained that the Charter also provides information on how the commission can comment on its services, including how to lodge complaints, give compliments and make suggestions.
According to him, the Charter provides information to the general public on the functions and services rendered by the Commission to the agencies and private companies whose activities it monitors and superintends.
Speaking, SERVICOM, Nnena Akajemeli said the launch marked a critical step in the attempt to ensure that NERC touches the lives of citizens in a very delightful manner.
