President Bola Tinubu has joined others to express sorrow over the passing of Mrs. Adenike Ebunoluwa Oyagbola, Nigeria’s first female minister of cabinet rank, describing her as a trailblazer whose contributions to national development will be long remembered.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commiserated with her family, the government, and the people of Ogun State, recognizing her as an “illustrious daughter” of the state and an “eminent citizen of Nigeria.”
Reflecting on her legacy, the President described Mrs. Oyagbola as “a beacon of inspiration for women in Nigeria” who “broke barriers and paved the way for countless women to aspire to and achieve leadership roles in the country.”
Mrs. Oyagbola served as Minister of National Planning from 1979 to 1983, playing a critical role in implementing Nigeria’s Fourth Development Plan, a blueprint that laid the foundation for economic growth and social progress.
“Mrs. Oyagbola’s unwavering commitment to youth development, empowerment, and the promotion of arts and culture has left an indelible mark on our nation,” President Tinubu noted, emphasizing that her impact on Nigeria’s creative industry remains profound.
Beyond her ministerial achievements, the late stateswoman was known for her dedication to ethical leadership and national service.
“In an era where threats to ethical standards are increasing, we shall miss Mrs. Oyagbola’s steadfast commitment to these principles,” the President added.
President Tinubu then went ahead to pray for the peaceful repose of her soul and urged her family to find comfort in her lasting legacy of service and impact.
