Elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has said that Nigeria is on the path to greatness and will soon become a country that every citizen will be proud of.
The nonagenarian made this bold assertion on Monday during his 99th birthday celebration, held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State.
According to a statement released by Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Fasoranti expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, hinging his conviction on the ongoing efforts of President Bola Tinubu and the innate potential of the Nigerian people.
“Although Nigeria might have missed opportunities to develop in the past, hope is very much alive now that the country is on the path to progress and greatness,” he said.
The elder statesman noted that his confidence in Nigeria’s transformation stemmed from the vision and policies of the current administration, emphasizing the significance of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Nigeria’s future is based on inspiration, and when Tinubu came to me to express his desire to run for the presidency of Nigeria, I prayed to the Almighty and I got a nod that the prayer would be answered. We continue to give glory and adoration to the Supreme Being for answering our prayers,” he said.
He added, “The future is very bright for the Yorubas as they are increasingly becoming conscious of the historic roles they are to play in the emancipation of the black race.”
Tinubu, in his tribute, described Pa Fasoranti as “a model of exemplary leadership.” Other dignitaries echoed this sentiment, highlighting Fasoranti’s dedication to public service, education, and human development.
Governors from the six South-Western states—Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, and Ogun—took turns to extol the virtues of the revered Yoruba leader.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State hailed him as “a rare symbol of patriotism, courage and integrity whose life of selfless service has become a guiding light for generations of Nigerians.”
Similarly, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, applauded the nonagenarian’s contributions to the progress of the Yoruba people and Nigeria at large, saying he is “a role model, a leader and father who deserves to be celebrated.”
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State described Fasoranti as “a great asset to the Yoruba race and Nigeria,” while Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, noted that “Pa Fasoranti has displayed great exemplary leadership that is worthy of emulation.”
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, also praised the elder statesman, stating that his life trajectory reflects “courage, honesty, integrity, an unblemished record in public service, and devotion to humanity.”
Speaking on behalf of the University of Ibadan, Vice Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale, represented by Registrar Mr. G.O. Saliu, remarked that “societies that want to make progress thrive on the strength of individuals like Fasoranti who embody that society’s ideals.”
Chief host, Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, recalled Pa Fasoranti’s unwavering commitment to Yoruba unity and security, noting, “there was a time when external forces threatened the Yoruba nation; it was leaders like Pa Fasoranti who stood firm in the defence of the people.”
Former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, said Fasoranti “deserves all the accolades going by the immense contributions he has made to Ondo State, to education and his leadership style which is quite inspiring.”
Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Olu Aderounmu, also celebrated Fasoranti “for his commitment to principled leadership style, human empowerment and community services.”
