Nigeria’s Super Falcons defender, Ashleigh Plumptre, has expressed her disappointment at not being fit enough to be on Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Head coach Justine Madugu unveiled his 25-player squad for the tournament on Friday, with Plumptre among the notable absentees.
The versatile defender has been sidelined since March after suffering a foot injury while on club duty for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad Ladies, and coach Madugu excluded the skillful player to allow her additional time to fully recover from the injured foot.
Although she is still recovering from the injury, the 28-year-old took to social media to voice her disappointment at missing the tournament while pledging her full support for the Super Falcons in Morocco.
“The body is asking for more time, and I’m listening. ❤️🩹
Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again,” Plumptre wrote on X.
“So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them; they need you. 💚
I am with you, ladies.
Naija no dey carry last.”
The former Leicester City defender made her WAFCON debut at the 2022 tournament in Morocco, where she established herself as a key member of the Super Falcons.
Plumptre also played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s successful 2024 WAFCON campaign, helping the team secure a record-extending 10th continental title.
