Professional footballer Sunday Afolabi’s journey from grassroots football in Oyo State to the international stage has brought renewed attention to the role that mentorship and timely opportunities play in shaping sporting careers.
Afolabi, who currently plays for Diamond Harbour FC in India, paid a courtesy visit last Friday to Hon. Umar Farouk Arisekola Alao, former Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Ibadan North Federal Constituency, to express appreciation for what he described as a defining intervention in his football career.
According to Afolabi, Arisekola Alao was instrumental in facilitating his move to Crown Football Club, Ogbomosho, during his tenure as Commissioner for Youth and Sports. At the time, the club served as one of the recognised pathways for talented young footballers seeking to establish themselves in Nigeria’s professional football system.
The opportunity marked a turning point for the young player. From Crown FC, Afolabi progressed through the professional ranks before securing opportunities overseas, eventually signing with Diamond Harbour FC in India.
Speaking during the visit, Afolabi said the support he received came at a critical stage of his career and provided the platform he needed to pursue professional football.
“I remain grateful for the confidence reposed in me when I needed it most,” he said, noting that the opportunity opened doors that ultimately transformed both his football career and personal life.
The visit has highlighted the broader impact of youth-focused interventions in sports development, particularly the importance of creating pathways for talented athletes to transition from grassroots football to the professional level.
During his tenure as commissioner for youth and sports, Arisekola Alao oversaw initiatives aimed at youth empowerment, sports development and talent discovery across Oyo State. His administration worked with sports institutions and stakeholders to provide opportunities for emerging athletes in different disciplines.
For many observers, Afolabi’s story illustrates how strategic support at the right moment can influence the trajectory of a young athlete’s career. It also underscores the value of sustained investment in grassroots sports development as a means of nurturing talent capable of competing on the international stage.
As Arisekola Alao seeks to represent Ibadan North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, stories such as Afolabi’s have become part of the broader conversation about his record in public service, particularly in youth development and sports administration.
