The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning to residents in 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to remain alert from Wednesday, 1 July, to Friday, 3 July 2026, to the risk of flash flooding and other weather-related hazards in the coming days due to expected heavy early rains.
According to NiMet’s Heavy Rainfall Forecast Bulletin No. 202606022, the affected states are Ekiti, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ondo, Lagos, Kogi, Benue, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba, as well as the Federal Capital Territory.
The agency anticipates minimal rainfall across the rest of the country during the forecast period.
NiMet warned that the anticipated moderate rainfall could trigger flash flooding, while strong winds accompanying the rain may pose risks to lives and property.
The agency advised motorists not to drive through floodwaters or surface run-off, warning that such waters often have strong undercurrents capable of sweeping vehicles away.
It also cautioned that slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during rainfall could disrupt road traffic, while strong winds may damage weak structures, trees, and communication masts.
As a precautionary measure, NiMet urged members of the public to disconnect electrical appliances before rainfall begins, rather than during the storm, to reduce the risk of electrical accidents.
For areas outside the forecast rainfall zone, the agency said no significant hydrometeorological hazards are expected but advised residents to continue monitoring weather updates and remain vigilant throughout the period.
