Barely a month after athletes from Ekiti State swept most of the medals at the 2022 CBN Junior Tennis Championship in Lagos, two female tennis players that represented the State at the just concluded maiden edition of the JOME National Senior Open Tennis Championship held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City have also returned victorious.

The Coach of the athletes, Mr. Wumi Ogunsakin who made this known in Ado Ekiti, stated that the competition was aimed to discover future stars and also serve as a ranking tournament.

He said that the Ekiti State contingent emerged victorious in the women’s doubles event to be crowned the National Women’s Doubles Champions.

Giving a breakdown, Ogunsakin said that the duo of Adewusi Toyosi and Salami Khadijat defeated their doubles counterpart, Asogba Toyin and Ekpeyong Rebecca from Lagos and Rivers State respectively by 2-0 (7-5, 6-3) to emerge National Women’s Doubles Champions.

The Ekiti team won the highly contested first set 7-5 and cruised to a 2-0 final score after winning the second set 6-3.

He attributed the feat to the support of Governor Kayode Fayemi as well as the commitment of the Chairman of the State Sports Council, Mrs. Olusola Osetoba and the General Manager of the Sports Council, Mr. Kunle Adeyemi, stressing that the exploits would have been impossible without such backbones.

Ogunsakin however stressed the need for well-to-do individuals and corporate organizations to support efforts of government at developing sports in the State towards enhancing the sector and achieving greater feats.
