Dr Kayode Fayemi, left, with Governor Ayodele Fayose...the two real gladiators in the Ekiti State political drama...

As the July 14 date appointed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the staging of the governorship election in Ekiti State approaches, there is dire need for all Ekiti sons and daughters and, indeed, Nigerians to plead with all the gladiators to allow the poll to run freely and fairly without blood letting in any way.

In the past few weeks, the supporters of both the incumbent governor, Dr Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party represented by Professor Kolapo Olusola and Dr Kayode Fayemi who is flying the flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have engaged one another is fiery exchange of words.

This is in addition to the recent shooting of a former House of Representative member and a governorship aspirant in APD, Barrister Opeyemi Bamidele in Ado Ekiti during Dr Fayemi’s campaign rally.

And from the camp of PDP, the battle started with the likes of  Senator Abiodun Olujimi who represents Ekiti South at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly taking up arms against Governor Fayose for single handedly picking his successor, Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka.

Others who opposed Fayose’s move included a former Minister of Works, Prince Adedayo Adeyeye, former Ambassador to Canada, Amb. Dare Bejide and immediate past Commissioner for Justice, Mr Owoseeni Ajayi.

Prince Adeyeye has since cross-carpeted to APC and has been leading blistering onslaught against the incumbent governor, Fayose.

Fayose on his own paid a visit to the Palace of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe where he ‘placed curses’ on any politician that plans or wishes to engage in violent activities before, during and after the fast approaching governorship election in the state.

It is ultimately instructive for all the gladiators to maintain orderliness and allow the election to be conducted peacefully. This is because nobody has monopoly of violence. When politicians engage in violence in connection with elections, it often leads to uprising and civil wars.

Many will be given the opportunity of witnessing the beginning of such wars, but nobody knows who and who will have the chance of witnessing the end.

It is better to stay on the side of peace, fairness and justice so that the nation’s democracy will be protected and more entrenched. Let only the wise hearken to the voice of wisdom. Ekiti State must not, for any reason, be turned to a theatre of violence or war.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
