Worried by the alarming rate of activities of some fraudsters who parade themselves as travel agents, the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA) has decided to clamp down on unregistered practitioners.

Olatokunbo Dagunduro, the National Vice Chairman, Southwest of the association, who revealed this at a press conference in Ibadan recently maintained that NANTA has embarked on the sensitization of members on this plan.

Also in attendance at the press conference were the Zonal Secretary of the association, Pastor Hezekiah Afolabi, Public Relations Officer (PRO), Shobanke Oluyemi, and the Financial Secretary, Omolola Adeyemi.

The NANTA National Vice Chairman maintained that the association will on June 26, 2018 in Lagos launch the Nigerian Travel Practitioners Identification Cards (NTPIC), in an event that will be presided over by Vice President Yemi Oshinbajo.

He revealed further that other top government functionaries to attend the launching of the NTPIC include the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, his counterpart in the Ministry of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirikaas as well as the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

Dagunduro declared that operators of travel agencies will only be given 30 days’ grace to get registered after the launch of the identification cards, adding that the essence of the introduction of the NTPIC is to ensure professionalism in the industry.

While revealing that after the 30 days of grace, operators of unregistered travel agencies will not be able to carry out business, Dagunduro said  the NTPIC will enable the 43 years old association to flush out touts and fraudsters from the industry.

He declared that: “We are fully backed by the Federal Government. We are determined to check the activities of these fraudsters who have been defrauding innocent citizens who are desperate to travel out of the country by cutting corners. We can no longer continue to fold our alms and watch these criminals to destroy our industry”.

The NANTA National Vice Chairman also revealed that there is a Bill currently before the National Assembly adding that when eventually passed into law, it  will further empower the association  to check criminal activities of these impostors.

According to him, “We need to be protected as professionals. The end will soon come for those who are touts and fraudsters in the industry”.
