It is no longer news that the Osun State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the postponement of its primary to elect its candidate for the Osun State gubernatorial election.
Reasons are being given for the last minute interesting decision.
The congress was originally scheduled to hold on Thursday July 19, but it will now hold on Friday July 20.
The 59th-minute-of-the-eleventh-hour postponement was announced by Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the party, very late on Wednesday night.
“The All Progressives Congress (APC) Primaries to elect the Party’s candidate for the forthcoming Osun State Governorship election has been postponed from Thursday 19th July, 2018 to Friday 20th July, 2018,” Abdullahi said in a statement.
“However, a meeting between the Primary Election Committee chaired by H.E. Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, Governor of Zamafara State and stakeholders will hold at the Osun State capital, Oshogbo on Thursday.”
Friday’s primary will be the first ‘direct primary’ by the party, following Monday’s announcement by Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman, that all card-carrying members of the party will be eligible to vote.
“We have decided, in order to ensure popular participation and deepen democracy in Osun State, that the primary election in line with the provisions of our constitution, which allows for either direct or indirect primary,” he had said.
“We have resolved that the governorship election in Osun State will be conducted on the basis of direct primary, which means every card carrying members of our party will participate in the process of nominating the flagbearer of the party who will contest governorship election on our party’s platform.”
