The sport-loving Yoruba first class monarch, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi has frowned at the slide of the reigning African Women’s Cup of Nations winners, Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking.

Nigerian women’s team dropped one place, from 38th to 39th in the latest ranking released by the world football governing body last week.

Oba Adeyemi who expressed his dismay over the situation in Ibadan while addressing newsmen at the founders day celebration of Ibadan City Polytechnics over the weekend, questioned the rationale and criterion used by FIFA in evaluating the efforts of the national teams.

He argued that all matches played by the Super Falcons before clinching the AWCON title for a record of ninth time in Ghana, amassing 19 points from the last ranking to date should be enough to push the team forward and not sliding back.

“I’m disappointed with the outcome of the FIFA ranking after our daughters had worked hard to maintain their top pedigree among African opponents winning nine out of the eleven African Women Cup of Nations, and still don’t improve in the FIFA appraisal”, the former boxer queried.

He, however, urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure the girls do well in the Women World Cup scheduled for France where Falcons would play along the host France, South Korea and Japan in group ‘A’.

Alaafin, however, advocated for better welfare package for the women’s team as against being in the shadow of their male counterparts, saying “Women are naturally more expensive to maintain than men, so why treating the men better than the women in terms of welfare.

“I believe our girls will perform better in the Women FIFA World Cup in France than their previous outing if the authorities encourage them with better welfare package. I commend the girls for their effort in maintaining the top place in African women football”, Alaafin noted.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking will be published on 29 March 2019.
