Ogun Speaker Tasks Corps Members On Skill Acquisition

Concerned by the need to empower the youth to be self-reliant in the society, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo has tasked Corps  members to take advantage of the various skills acquisition and vocational  education programmes provided by the  National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) within the duration of their service year.

Oluomo, who made the remarks, while he played host to the State Management team of the Scheme led by its Coordinator, Mrs Belinda Faniyi, explained that  there was need for youth to engage in vocational training to complement  their formal education to further propel them for greatness in their future endeavours.

According to him, the effective acquisition of such relevant skills and vocations would make them employers of labour, who would in turn complement government’s effort at ensuring national development through increased Gross Domestic Product  (GDP).

Assuring the team of the Assembly’s continued support in the enactment of enabling legislations meant to promote small and micro scale businesses in the State, as well as the resolve of the Prince Dapo Abiodun led- adminstration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, he posited that the NYSC scheme remained notable for integrating youth from different ethnic groups in the country for national unity and development.

Earlier in her address, the State Cordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Faniyi called for the support of government, especially in the provision of more infrastructural facilities at the Sagamu Orientation camp.

She stated that the Scheme needed more interventions from government, the State Coordinator harped on the need for various Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies to provide more support for corp members.

In another development, Speaker Olakunle Oluomo has canvassed for more support for polytechnic education in Nigeria as it remains the bedrock technological development of the nation.

The Speaker made the request while receiving members of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Alumni Association  led by the  President, Akeem Ayoade during  a courtesy on the Leadership of the Assembly at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

He emphasized the need for technological advancement of the nation through polytechnic education which had been known for producing students who are highly productive in their various field of studies.

Oluomo noted that Moshood Abiodun Polytechnic, being a leading institution in the nation had been revalidated by the Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology amendment bill, 2019 recently passed by the Assembly for effective running of academic activities.

Earlier in his remarks, the President of the MAPOLY Alumni Association, Alh. Ayoade lauded the State House of Assembly for the holistic consideration of the amendment bill, which he noted would revive academic activities in the age-long institution which has produced notable personalities who are being rated high in their various fields of endeavours.
