Oghenekaro Etebo, Super Eagles midfielder has said he was on the verge of joining English Premier League side Watford before Championship side Stoke City snapped him up in 2018.

Etebo, who moved to Getafe on a five-month loan, said this while being unveiled by the Spanish club on Thursday.

“To be fair, after the World Cup I was supposed to go to Watford, but while we were preparing for the World Cup, the officials of Stoke City flew down from London to Austria and they approached me. The target of the team is to go back to the Premier League because they spent a lot of money and they are a good team, they are a big team and a Premier League team.

“All the same, it didn’t work out well, so as we all know to play in the Premier League is a good deal as well, just as to play in the Spanish League.

But I had to say to them that since Getafe were looking for me, I had to come and showcase myself here.

The Eagles midfielder praised his new teammates and coaching staff for taking the club to an enviable height, promising to give his best while with the club.

“It’s like a new chapter for me, I was in Spain before with Las Palmas, but like I said, it’s  a new beginning for me to make sure a give my best to the people of Getafe. I know it’s not going to be easy, all the same, the hardwork has to come from me. It’s five months to the end of the season, let’s see what I am going to bring to the team,” he added.
