Nigeria’s Super Eagles striker, Ibrahim Sunusi has been shortlisted for the Newcomer of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.

After an indifferent start to his Major League Soccer career, CF Montreal’s rising star has been in fine form in his last eleven games in the division with four goals to his name, after making his senior debut for the national team.

The official website of Major League Soccer announced the nominees for the 2021 MLS End of Year awards, with former Nasarawa United player nominated for two accolades.

For the Newcomer of the Year category, Sunusi faces competition from Cristian “Chicho” Arango, Luiz Araujo, Tyler Blackett, Joaquin Torres and 33 other players.

Sunusi is one of three players with a Nigerian background on a 43-man longlist for the Young Player of the Year award, the others being Atlanta United’s Nigeria-born fullback George Bello and the cap-tied United States international Daryl Dike, who turns out for Orlando City.

The MLS Year-End awards will be determined through voting from current MLS players, MLS clubs (coaches, technical directors/general managers), select media members representing local and national outlets who consistently covered the 2021 MLS regular season.

Major League Soccer will release a list of finalists prior to the start of the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs.
