Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote contacted him during the Osun State governorship election and asked him to delete his social media posts.
Speaking during an interview with News Central TV on Tuesday, Davido said he received calls from influential figures while monitoring the August 15 governorship election won by his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The singer said he refused to delete his updates on X, formerly Twitter, where he posted polling unit results and raised concerns about delays during the collation process.
“I heard the Senate President was trying to call the collation centre… They were calling me to delete. I said sorry o. You guys have literally just gone against my uncle… I can’t delete anything. Uncle Aliko called me too. I said, “Uncle, I’m not deleting until the INEC announcement,” he revealed.
Allegation
Davido also alleged that political opponents brought more than N110 billion in cash into Osun State to influence the election.
He said his family did not spend money on election day but relied on voters to protect their votes.
“We didn’t spend a dime on election day. All we could do was just pray that these people take their money and vote for us.
“It got to a point where it was the Osun people that were beating the people that were trying to seize ballots. People are tired,” he added.
Davido described the election as a difficult contest, claiming that 17 governors, 50 senators and several members of the House of Representatives worked against Adeleke.
“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” Davido said.
He praised Osun voters for supporting Adeleke and said the experience left him emotional.
“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” he said.
“My uncle should be an example to all other government officials and governors. When you stand by the people, the people will stand by you,” he stated.
New Focus
Davido said he would now focus on youth and sports development in Osun as chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund.
“As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.
He said plans include a recreation centre with football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts.
Davido’s political involvement stems from his family ties. Ademola Adeleke is his uncle, while the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, Osun’s first civilian governor from 1992 to 1993, was also his uncle.
Adeleke first contested the governorship in 2018 and lost to Gboyega Oyetola after a rerun. He defeated Oyetola in 2022 and took office on November 27, 2022.
