One person has been killed and three others injured after a man opened fire at guests during a wedding over loud music in Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano.
Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying operatives responded after reports of gunshots at the event and arrested the man, Rabiu Mukthar, who was behind the crime.
According to the command’s spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Mukthar emerged from his residence as music was playing at the ceremony and fired several shots into the crowd, causing panic.
“Police moved to the scene and arrested Mukthar and another suspect. A pump-action gun was recovered from him,” Kiyawa said.
During interrogation, Mukthar allegedly told investigators he was angered that the organisers did not consult him before playing loud music. He claimed the noise disturbed him and prevented him from sleeping.
The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. The recovered firearm will be tendered as evidence.
The incident has renewed concerns about the use of firearms to settle disputes over noise and social gatherings in residential areas.
Police noted that such disagreements should be reported to authorities rather than handled violently to avoid loss of life.
The Commissioner of Police held a strategic meeting with all Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, Squadron Commanders, and Heads of Departments at the Police Headquarters, Bompai, Kano.
The meeting was convened to review the state’s security situation and reposition the Command for improved service delivery. Bakori commended officers for sustained crime prevention efforts, prompt response to distress calls, and stronger community engagement, noting that the current relative peace in Kano is a result of teamwork and commitment across formations.
