The coach handling Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has been put under fire by Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, ex-member of FIFA’s technical team.
The veteran coach criticized Rohr’s recently released Super Eagles’ list saying it is not what Nigerian football needs to be considered as being developed or developing.
Onigbinde who expressed these opinions while featuring on Space 90.1FM Ibadan on Saturday afternoon also blamed football administrators in the country for taking over the job of the technical team expected to be the power house of football development.
His words “there are so many things wrong with the way the game of football is being managed in this country. The much talked-about team list released by Coach Gernot Rohr is not encouraging. He selected 23 foreign based players and the 24th player was picked from the local league. This is not good enough.
“The nucleus of the National Team should be made up of home based players. You see, all the 23 players he selected are playing for different teams abroad and they all have different orientations. How can he come up with a real team with this kind of arrangement?”
Onigbinde continued “As far as I am concerned, the problem is purely administrative. The nerve center of any football organization is the Technical Department. The Administrators in Nigeria have become dictators. They are not allowing the Technical Team to make sound decisions.”
The former CAF technical director also opined that before the contract of Coach Rohr is renewed, his records should be properly scrutinized to determine if he is worthy of being retained.
“To me, Rohr is only experimenting. He is not helping Nigerian football to develop. What has he done in three years? We have not had a steady national team since he came”.
