OYOMESI Education Agenda: Government Makes More Clarifications

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has approved the Performance Incentive Links to teachers who have distinguished themselves towards the development of education in the state.

This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Dr. Bisi Akin-Alabi during an interactive programme that took place at the House of Chiefs, House of Assembly Complex, Secretariat, Ibadan between OYOMESI Project Committee and leaders of professional bodies in education sector in the state including All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and Association of Primary School Head teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON).

The interaction was to collectively form a common ground among stakeholders in education sector of the state to promote students’ achievement and prepare them for global competitiveness, raising competent, civil citizens and prepare Oyo State for a knowledge-based future.

While unveiling the third strand of the OYOMESI agenda, which is improving teachers’ competencies and motivation, Dr. Akin-Alabi stated that it is imperative for teachers as major stakeholders in education sector to be involved in continuing professional development with the purpose of boosting their performance.

She submitted that Governor Abiola Ajimobi has approved strands of incentive links such as discount incentive scheme, reward incentive scheme and incentive for senior secondary school teachers that are linked to performance for their input towards development of education system in the state.

Dr. Akin-Alabi noted that the first and second strands of the agenda have been held where parents and students were involved; adding that the avenues were used to discuss character education through the use of informal strategy to block holes in the character of students and prepare them to be competent, civil citizens.

In her address, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education, Hajjia Bolatito Adebisi, who is also a key member of the project explained that for any individual to be freed from the malady of ignorance, illiteracy, and poverty and as well unlocking his potential he must be educated.

She opined that “OYOMESI agenda presents unlimited opportunities for all children of school-age and undergraduates with the purpose of building the future of our dear Oyo State.

“It is the decision of the present administration in the state to increase the heat on education sector by developing appropriate policies that will reposition the sector to an enviable status where it would be ranked, the undisputed Premier State of Education in Nigeria,” Hajjia Adebisi submitted.

Mr. Adeyemi Adekola, who is the Special Assistant to the Governor on Education and also a member of the team, in his welcome address noted that fall in the standard of education in the state is the fault of all relevant stakeholders. He also stated that to revive it, all hands must be on deck including government, parents and personnel.

Adekola emphasized that Governor Ajimobi is putting efforts together to ensure restoration of education sector in the state, hence, the inauguration of School Governing Board (SGB). He added that the philosophy OYOMESI is to consolidate on the existing policies, rather than replacing them.
