Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri settled for Silver in the Men’s Singles final against Malaysia’s Gao Ning in a thrilling six set match at the XXI Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

The encounter ended 4-2 in favor of the 35-year-old Malaysian who won 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-3, 9-11, 5-11 on the last day of events at the Gold Coast.

In their previous meeting, Ning defeated the Nigerian in the Men’s Singles, third round match at the 2014 Commonwealth Games; en route to a spot in the final – the Asian won all four sets.

Aruna, who was a quaterfinalist at 2016 Rio Olympics, stated that he is pleased with his performance despite winning silver in the men’s table tennis singles event.

“Not the result that I wanted, but I am still very satisfied with my performance and silver is better than bronze,” Aruna wrote on his Instagram page @quadriaruna.

He also thanked his club, Sporting Club, his wife, Teju Aruna,  and his supporters who cheered him on during the games in Australia.

“I want to say thanks to the best club in the world @sportingclubedeportugal for giving me the opportunity to represent my country here in Australia.

“And to all the people cheering and supporting me, I want to say you are all well appreciated.

“To my prayer warriors, I am saying thanks for the unlimited support.

And to my beautiful wife, @tejuluv thanks for the great role you played for making me not to loose hope of coming to Australia during sickness

“It’s time to return back to Portugal and face the next challenge in Portuguese league semi final.”

In the Bronze medal match, India’s Sharath Achanta defeated England’s Samuel Walker to pick finish third.

Meanwhile, Aruna’s silver brought Team Nigeria’s medal haul to 24 (Gold 9, Silver 9, Bronze 6) which saw them finish 9th on the overall medal’s table.

Nigeria presented 89 athletes in 10 sports.
