Primaries: Need For Politicians, Parties To Exercise Caution

All the political parties in Nigeria have been busy struggling to conclude their primary elections to field candidates who will fly their flags during the nation’s 2019 general elections.

As a result of this, the political terrain has been full of hyper-activities. This is being more accentuated because of the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to extend the deadline of October 7, 2018 given to the parties to produce candidates.

Both the social media and the conventional news media have been awash with stories of how subterfuge, carpet crossing, horse trading have been reigning supreme among Nigerian politicians.

In addition, shocking developments are also being reported. Hitherto political heavy-weights are losing parties’ tickets to lesser-known opponents.

It is important to draw the attention of these gladiators to the fact that getting tickets of political parties is not supposed to be a do-or-die affair.

Since almost all the political parties do not have identifiable ideological standing, it may not be expedient for observers to blame them.

However, it is still important for them to consider the welfare of the electorates.

The Nigerian electorates are the reason the political parties and even, the politicians are existing. Even, if they seem to have forgotten this.

Primaries or no primaries, politicians must not allow the peace of the land to be disturbed because of their plans towards 2019 general elections.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
