The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged the 33 local government and Local council Developments Areas (LCDAs) in the State to ensure the maintenance of constituency projects executed by the Lawmakers in their domains in the interest of the people the projects were executed for.

The House made the call sequel to a motion moved by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Abdulwasi Musah which was co-sponsored by the Speaker, Hon. Adesina Michael Adeyemo and the Majority Leader, Hon. Kehinde Subair.

Hon. Musah hinted that this call became imperative in view of the fact that the constituency projects usually outlive the Legislators term of office and will need to be sustained.

He added that the constituents who are the beneficiaries do not show care as far as maintenance is concerned, stressing that such projects were abandoned by the local government, especially in a situation where the legislator that initiated the project and the local government executives belong to different political parties.

According to him, “such constituency projects include skill acquisition programmes, provision of block of classrooms and other educational materials, provision of health care facilities and other items. Other form of empowerment includes reduction of illiteracy levels by establishing bursary awards for the bright but indigent students, making available the basic necessities of life – borehole and well water, street lights and other developmental projects.”

Hon. Musah further hinted that if proper succession mechanism was not put in place to sustain and maintain constituency project which was meant to bring succor to the constituents, it would just be seen as a waste of money or temporary facelift.

Some Lawmakers in their different contributions commended the movers of the motion for bringing it before the House for deliberation and the House has referred it to the House Committee on Local Government for further deliberation.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the plenary, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Abdulwasi Musah further disclosed that the House had noticed that all over the State, there are lots of constituency projects executed by the former Lawmakers both at the State and federal levels that were being neglected and not maintained by the communities where they were executed after the lawmakers had served out their terms in office.

According to him, “the implication is that we have millions of naira wasting away in our various local government areas spent to execute projects like boreholes, classrooms and health centres.  These projects are left there as they were because the person that executed them is no more in office. We now feel that there should be somebody responsible for these projects because the projects are not just serving the interest of former lawmakers but are serving the interest of the communities. We believe that the local government should take over some of these projects so that people in the respective communities will continue to benefit immensely from these projects,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State House has read the Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency Authority Bill, 2017 for the first time.
