Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon.(Pastor) Kola Oluwawole, has reiterated that the House under his control is not in any way “in the pocket” of the executive.

The Speaker, who also charged the law students of the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti to be diligent in their studies so that they could achieve their aspirations and become better persons in their choosing career, made these statements stated this while delivering a lecture titled, “the roles of legislature in modern day democracy” at the 2018 Law Week of the Law Students’ Society of the university in Ado Ekiti, at the weekend. According to a statement by his Special Assistant (Media), Stephen Gbadamosi, in Ado Ekiti on Friday, the Speaker  enumerated the functions of legislature to include lawmaking, nurturing democratic values and ethos and described  legislature as a bedrock of democracy.

“I have said it times without number that saying that this House of Assembly is the pocket of the executive is a fallacy. The fact that we have a harmonious working relationship does not mean we have no checks and balances.

“Also, I have always said that when the opposition gets into government, they should put their enemies in the House of Assembly. Then we would see how they can work to improve the lot of the people. Ayodele Fayose is our leader, but, as a House of Assembly, we check him when it is necessary,” he said.

He educated the students on the functions of  the various arms of government that included the judiciary and the executive.

Rt Hon Oluwawole applauded Aare Bamofin Afe Babalola for siting the University in Ekiti State and described the institution as the fastest growing University in Africa.

In his response, Aare Bamofin, Afe Babalola, represented by the institutions’ Head of Department, Public and International law, Barrister Sean Fabamise, thanked the speaker for honouring the invitation and described him as a friend of the institution who had been contributing to   the success of the University.

The Speaker of the Law Students Society of the Afe Babalola University Legislative House, Okeme Ufedo-Ojo Precious, praised Pastor Oluwawole for his brilliant presentation and charged his colleagues to reflect on the knowledge garnered in the lecture.

The Speaker later paid a visit to the Aare Bamofin in his office, where he also eulogised the Speaker for being a committed and loyal to upholding the welfare of the people of the state.
