Oyo Gubernatorial Seat: 39 Candidates Are In The Race – INEC

The resident commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oyo State, Barrister Mutiu Agboke has disclosed that 39 candidates are eligible to contest in the 2019 gubernatorial election in the state.

He also confirmed that about 927, 225 Permanent Voters’ Cards are yet to be collected.

Bar. Mutiu Agboke disclosed this during a media briefing held during the week to inform the public on the level of preparation by the state’ electoral umpire in connection with the  2019 general elections.

While giving out the number of eligible candidates for the national elections, that include presidential, Senate and House of Representatives, he said 76 candidates will contest presidential, Senate, 58, and House of Representatives, 198 respectively.

Bar. Agboke expressed further that 39 governorship candidates and 623 House of Assembly candidates will slug it out at state election levels.

He opined that out of all the candidates for the gubernatorial election, only three are female, while 36 are male. For Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly, there are four, 24 and 112 female candidates respectively.

Bar Agboke, in the Permanent Voters’Card statistic made available, revealed that Oyo State has total number of registered voters of 2,954,720 and 927,225 PVCs yet to be collected.

He said that INEC office in Oyo State has received another batch of 103,737 PVCs for voters that sought transfer, replacement of lost and defaced PVCs.

Bar Mutiu Agboke assured that the commission will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that 2019 general elections in the state is not only credible but free and fair.

He noted that the commission’s staff members are currently undergoing training in order for them to be at their optimum best and discharge their duty effectively, as well engaging relevant stakeholders, particularly media to ensure constant relations and robust interaction.

Oyo INEC’s Resident Commissioner advised those that are yet to collect their Permanent Voters’ Cards to go and collect them, as collection is still ongoing at the the commission offices across the 33 local government areas and other designated centers.
