Ibadan Collapsed Building: No Life Was Lost- COREN Chief Inspector, Sam Adeleke

The Chief Inspector, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, Engineering, Regulator and Monitoring, ERM, Oyo State chapter, Engineer Sam Adeleke has confirmed that no casualty was recorded in the collapsed building incident that occurred in Ibadan on Friday.

Engineer Adeleke, while speaking on behalf of other professional groups and agencies at the scene of the incident, stated that as at Saturday morning, there was no record of casualty as a result of the incident.

According to him, “as at today, there is no life lost, we thank God for that. There are few minor injuries and they were taken to the hospital, and almost all of them have been discharged, some of them were even seen around this morning.

Engr. Adeleke disclosed that the owner of the property has been identified and that he is cooperating with their investigation.

He said “Concerning our investigation, we have identified the owner, we have made contact with him and he is cooperating with us and we will get further information.”

The COREN Chief Inspector noted that all professional bodies at the scene including National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Oyo State Emergency Agency, SEMA, and other professional groups, Nigeria Institute of Architect, Nigeria Institute of Builders, Nigeria Institute of Town Planners as well as Nigerian Society of Engineers have been working as a team to ensure safety.

Engr. Sam Adeleke reiterated that judgment on the cause of the collapse is not something they can quickly be pronounced. “I want to state that you don’t run into judgment from what you see, we will carry out tests and we will be able to explain what is the cause of the collapse.”

Also at the scene was the South West Coordinator, National Emergency Agency, Mr. Slaku Lugard Bijimi and Town Planner Azeez Mubarak.
