Eguavoen Plays Host As Onyekuru, Others Storm Eagles’ Camp

Nantes winger Moses Simon is the latest Super Eagles player to land in camp as coach Austin Eguavoen intensifies preparations for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks of in Cameroon January 9.

It swells the number of players in camp to 11, with 10 training before Simon’s arrival late on New Year’s day.

The Eagles camp opened on Wednesday for the start of preparations for the 33rd edition of the AFCON tournament, which ends February 6. Cyprus-based goalkeeper Francis Uzoho and Olympiakos forward Henry Onyekuru had earlier arrived camp in Abuja on Saturday to take the total number of players in camp to 10. All the players trained before the arrival of Simon.

The first set of players to arrive at the camp were central defender Olisa Ndah, Taiwo Awoniyi and John Noble.

Our correspondent learnt that Chidera Ejuke of CSKA Moscow, Alayanspor’s Chidozie Awaziem, Daniel Akpeyi, who plies his trade for Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa and Almeria’s Sadiq Umar are also in camp in Abuja.  Players based in the United Kingdom are expected to report to camp on January 3.

The players based in the UK are Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, William Troost-Ekong, Frank Onyeka, and Joe Aribo.

Meanwhile, Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, confirmed on his Twitter handle that he would join up with the team on Sunday (today).

Nigeria are drawn in Group B alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau and will begin their AFCON campaign against the Pharaohs on January 11 at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua. The team will depart for Garoua, Cameroon on January 6, six days before their opening group game against seven-time champions Egypt
