Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s government in Lagos State, on Tuesday, said accident rate in the state reduced by 63.7 per cent since the ban on commercial motorcycles on some routes was enforced on June 1.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederick Oladeinde, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ forum with the theme, ‘Okada ban: What next?’ held in Ikeja.

He said, “Today, we are delighted to report our position on the review of the anti-Okada enforcement operation in the last two months. It is important to mention that the operation has recorded tremendous success and compliance.

“In the affected areas, within the period under review, available records showed that crime and accident rates reduced astronomically by 86% and 63.7% respectively, while a total of 7,500 motorcycles were impounded and crushed.

“On average monthly, we used to record about 300 to 400 Okada crashes, but that has gone down to 176 in June and July and it continues to go down further. So, that shows that with the ban on Okada, we are beginning to save lives, especially of our youths.

“The attention of the state government has also been drawn to reports that some unscrupulous people are planning to attack the state and the government is already working round the clock to secure the state and residents from these non-state actors.”

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, noted that the meeting was held to get public reaction to the ban on motorcycles.
