  • All You Need To Know About Alternative Dispute Resolution

As part of its efforts to create awareness on the alternative dispute resolution plans of the Oyo State Government through the Multi-Door Court House, the management of the OYSMDC paid a courtesy visit to the Headquarters of PMParrot and Parrot Xtra Magazine located at Ring Ring, Ibadan on 15th January, 2019.

The team, which comprised Mrs. Anuolu Gade, the Director, Mr. Adewale Okeyode Adesina, member of Governing Board and Chairman, Publicity and Awareness Committee and Mr. Emmanuel Olaleye, Case Manager/Dispute Resolution Officer, pointed out the benefits of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

Mr. Adewale disclosed that the Multi-Door Court was established by the present administration in the state under Governor Abiola Ajimobi to avail the people of the state an alternative to dispute resolution.

He made it known that through the Multi-Door Court House, “cases can easily be settled. Lawyers may come in but the initiative is an informal setting. There is no formality. As against litigation, you come, sit and tell your grievances and they are settled. At the end, everybody wins”. He also confirmed that 164 cases were handled by the Court last year and 90% of them were settled.

The Director, Mrs. Anuolu Gade reiterated that the court has power to entertain all sort of cases apart from criminal cases with confidentiality guaranteed. “Courts can even refer cases to the Multi-Door Court House”.

Mrs. Gade also explained that the reason why it is called Multi-Door is because it involves different ways of settling cases which include negotiation, mediation, arbitration and reconciliation. Explaining the court’s procedures, she pointed out that cases are instituted in the three ways; walk-in, court referral and direct intervention. She said while some people walk in to table their matters, some are referred from regular courts while the Multi-Door Court sometimes does direct intervention. “And we have ADR professionals to attend to them”, she confirmed.

Parrot Xtra’s Publisher, Mr. Olayinka Agboola expressed the readiness of his organization to collaborate with the management of the Oyo State Multi-Door Court to sensitize the public on the importance and adoption of the court as an avenue for alternative dispute resolution.

He also advised the team to sensitize the public through jingles especially in Yoruba language to ensure that more people are reached.
