Emmanuel Dennis has claimed his Premier League club Watford “threatened” him over his participation at the AFCON, according to Super Eagles’ caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen.

Nigeria has dropped Dennis from their AFCON squad after Watford hung on to a technicality on the player’s invitation.

And now Eguavoen has said Dennis told him his club even threatened so that he will not feature at the AFCON in Cameroon.

“The club said they won’t allow Dennis to go (to the AFCON),” Eguavoen reported.

“Dennis also told me that his club are doing everything humanly possible for him not to be at the AFCON.

“I can’t force it.

“Dennis said he wants to come, but his club are threatening him.

“We have to play with what we have.”

He is the leading scorer for Watford with eight goals and five assists as the club battle to stay up in the Premier League on their return from the English Championship.

The Eagles have now been forced to revise their final 28-man by replacing four players in one swoop.

Henry Onyekuru in for injured Victor Osimhen, Peter Olayinka takes the place of Dennis, Tyronne Ebuehi comes in for injured Shehu Abdullahi and Semi Ajayo has replaced another injured defender, Leon Balogun.
