The Biodun Oyebanji-led government in Ekiti State has expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiative to implement an all-inclusive education system across the country.
The Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, said Ekiti would align with the Federal Government’s plan to create a unified education system that catered to all students, regardless of their physical or social differences.
Agboola spoke in Ado-Ekiti during an event commemorating the International Albinism Awareness Day, which brought together over 300 persons with albinism from across the state.
The Special Adviser, who reiterated the Governor Biodun Oyebanji administration’s commitment to fostering inclusivity in the state’s education system, said the administration would work to ensure students with special needs felt a sense of belonging.
She urged parents to regularly engage with their children’s schools to discuss strategies for supporting their specific challenges, noting that collaboration between parents and educators was key to effective inclusion.
Agboola, who hailed members of Ekiti State Albinism Association, assured them that the state government would continue to facilitate access to experts to address the unique challenges faced by persons with albinism.
The Chairman of Ekiti State chapter of Albinism Association of Nigeria, Mr. Oniya Oluwafemi, said albinism was not a disease but a condition affected by sun exposure, which could lead to skin cancer if not managed properly.
He lauded Governor Oyebanji for his support to the albinos and inclusive governance, citing employment and skill acquisition opportunities extended to persons with disabilities.
At the event, dermatologists led by Dr. Olufemi Ologun from the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Osun State, provided skin and blood examinations for participants.
