Illegal Livestock Activities: OYRLEA, Environment Ministry Raid Akobo Community

The Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority, OYRLEA, in collaboration with security operatives and the Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, conducted a targeted raid to clamp down on illegal livestock and agricultural activities in the Mercy Rock area of Akobo, Ibadan.

The enforcement exercise, which took place on Thursday, was prompted by a formal petition from residents concerning a commercial piggery operating within a residential area.

Upon arrival at the location, the enforcement team was confronted with a pervasive and offensive odor extending beyond the premises identified in the petition. This development necessitated a broader environmental assessment, leading to the involvement of health and sanitation officers from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in the operation.

A house-to-house inspection conducted within the community revealed widespread non-compliance with extant environmental and land-use regulations. Several residential buildings were discovered to be accommodating commercial agricultural activities in clear violation of approved standards.

The identified infractions included the operation of fish ponds, poultry and turkey farms, and piggery businesses, as well as the rearing of goats, sheep, and other livestock within residential premises.

Officials confirmed that these activities were the primary sources of environmental pollution, noxious odors, and escalating public health risks affecting residents of the area.

In accordance with the Oyo State Environmental Sanitation and Waste Management Laws, all property owners found in breach were served with a 14-day abatement notice. The notice mandates the immediate cessation of all unlawful operations and the remediation of the environmental violations within the stipulated period.

Furthermore, the Chairman and Executives of the Akobo Mercy Rock Landlords’ Association have been summoned to appear before OYRLEA for consultations on community-wide compliance with environmental and public health standards.

OYRLEA reaffirmed the Oyo State Government’s resolve to collaborate with relevant agencies to protect residential communities from environmental hazards. The authority stressed that strict enforcement of laws governing environmental sanitation and animal rearing will continue across the state to safeguard public health and ensure sustainable urban living.

Residents are urged to report suspected violations to OYRLEA or the Ministry of Environment through official channels.
