Nollywood actor, Wale Akorede, popularly known as Okunnu, has sparked reactions online after speaking on the rising cost of petrol and the state of the nation.

In a video posted on his Instagram page on Sunday, the veteran entertainer highlighted the recent increase in fuel prices, noting that the cost of petrol rose from ₦1,240 per litre to ₦1,340 in a day.

“Today is the 22nd of March, 2026. As of yesterday, which was the 21st, petrol was ₦1,240 per litre. Today, which is Sunday, petrol is now ₦1,340 per litre,” he said.

He questioned whether the government should be held solely responsible for the sudden increase, asking, “Is it the government that increased it or we, Nigerians?”

Speaking further, Okunnu expressed concern over the high cost of fuel despite Nigeria being an oil-producing country.

“We have our own crude oil, so why is fuel expensive? Other countries have fuel too, but theirs isn’t expensive. We are the ones responsible for this hardship,” he said.

Describing the impact of the situation on ordinary Nigerians, the actor raised concerns about those struggling to meet basic needs, particularly low-income earners.

“What of those who cannot afford basic needs? Bikemen? What will be their current situation because things will become expensive now, plus their low income?” he added.

His remarks have since generated reactions online, with many Nigerians sharing concerns over the rising cost of living and its impact on daily survival.

Commenting on his post, actor Apakunfor also expressed his disappointment, saying, “My country situation.”

“Hmmmmm, Nigeria we hail thee,” actor Biodun Thomas added.

#realxcogitate commented, “That’s why govt policy and regulations are very important. Nigeria govt is the foundational fault of everything. If govt is doing their job, no one will be price-gauging when they know the law will catch up with them.”

#jilomyte supported the comment, saying, “There should be a regulated body that oversees the prices of fuel, any station that doesn’t comply with be fined, if there are strict measures, all this won’t happen. If strong measures are placed on naira abuse, then the same can be applied to fuel price regulation.”

The actor’s remarks come amid a series of price hikes by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which has increased its gantry price five times in March 2026 alone.
